Frequently Asked Questions

Still trying to decide if Layne Performance Weightlifting is for you?

Weightlifting is one of the fastest-growing sports, and for good reason. It is the most powerful and explosive sport, and many of the performance characteristics trained through weightlifting are critical for performance in all other strength-power sports, like track & field, baseball, basketball, soccer, etc. As a result, weightlifting will make you a better athlete in general. Plus, it is just challenging enough to keep you coming back session after session to achieve that perfect lift, while also being fun and enjoyable. You’ll never go back to your normal training routine once you’ve tried weightlifting.

Do I need experience to join?

The purpose of the weightlifting club at Layne Performance is to provide a world-class training experience for weightlifters of all skill levels. We welcome beginner weightlifters. However, it is recommended that you have some experience with resistance exercise or sport before joining the weightlifting club. If you don’t have any experience but want to get started, check out our Barbell Basics course. You’ll be ready for weightlifting in just a few months.

Am I the right age to start weightlifting?

The weightlifting club at Layne Performance is open to weightlifters of all ages and skill levels. In fact, we encourage weightlifters to begin weightlifting as early as possible, as the sport is safe and enjoyable for kids and even older adults. We strive to create life-long weightlifters at Layne Performance.

Layne Performance offers both adult and youth weightlifting classes. Please see the Classes page for details, class times, and to sign up.

Do I have to come to each class session, and how long do they last?

Our competitive weightlifters train 4-6 times per week. Sessions are scheduled for two hours, but the workouts can be completed in 1-1.5 hours. So if you can’t make it right on time or you can’t stay until the end, that’s no problem! Although we train together, the session goes at your own pace.

If you can’t make it to 4 class sessions per week, or you train for another sport and just want to work on weightlifting on the side, we offer a Weightlifting Technique course that meets twice per week.

Do I have to compete to train with the club?

Competition is optional, but encouraged. Many of our athletes compete several times per year in local and national competitions. We also host local competitions at Layne Performance. So if you would like to dip your toes into competition, we have options!
