Andrew Layne, PhD, CSCS, USAW has more than 15 years of experience in the fitness industry as a researcher, sport scientist, strength coach and personal trainer. Throughout the years, Dr. Layne has helped hundreds of clients improve their quality of life. These individuals chose Dr. Layne to help them achieve various goals, like attaining greatness in sport, developing strength and power, recovering mobility after an injury or health crisis, or just to get in better shape. Whatever your fitness goals, Dr. Layne will leverage his education and practical experience to get you there.

Education

PhD in Exercise Physiology, University of Florida, 2017

Dr. Layne earned his PhD through the departments of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology and Aging and Geriatric Research at UF. His research involved muscle repair and recovery following exercise, exercise for preventing disability in older adults, and resistance exercise for older adults with joint pain and arthritis. Consequently, Dr. Layne has published numerous scientific manuscripts and a textbook chapter on age-related muscle loss, and his research has been cited hundreds of times. Most importantly, Dr. Layne’s research on resistance training helped hundreds of older adults improve their mobility and extend their healthspan.

Master’s in Sport Performance, East Tennessee State University, 2010

Dr. Layne earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from East Tennessee State University through the first sport science program in the United States. During his time at ETSU, Dr. Layne served as a strength coach and sport scientist for several men’s and women’s NCAA sports teams. He also competed as a weightlifter and he helped lay the foundation for ETSU’s Designated Olympic Training Site for USA Weightlifting. Dr. Layne has been involved in weightlifting as an athlete, coach, club director and referee ever since.

Experience

Dr. Layne has worked with individuals of all ages and backgrounds throughout his career. Broadly, Dr. Layne’s expertise is leveraging resistance exercise to improve performance. However, performance demands are specific to the individual, and Dr. Layne’s education and experience allow him to design training plans to help almost anyone. His expertise covers:

Layne Performance Weightlifting

Dr. Layne (USAW Level 2) is the former co-founder of the Gator Weightlifting club team at the University of Florida, where he served as coach until 2020. In 2020, Dr. Layne founded his current club, Layne Performance weightlifting. Dr. Layne has produced more than 10 national level weightlifters, and the numbers continue to grow.
